The film
The story centers on Mitchell Goosen, sent from Southern California to stay with relatives in Cincinnati while his parents work abroad. His nonviolent surfer confidence initially clashes with a competitive school culture. Inline skating becomes both his way through the city and the film’s defining action language.

AFI identifies Airborne as television director Rob Bowman’s first feature. Bill Apablasa wrote the screenplay from a story developed with producer Stephen McEveety; Bruce Davey and McEveety produced for Icon Productions. Daryn Okada photographed the film, Harry B. Miller III edited it, John Myhre designed the production, and Stewart Copeland composed the music.
Production
Principal photography took place in winter 1992 across Cincinnati, Kentucky, and Southern California. Production notes say an Ohio blizzard eliminated a contemplated move to Minnesota for snowy exteriors. Western Hills High School hosted weekend classroom filming with students as background actors, and the company spent five days in Kentucky before moving west.
Reception and afterlife
Warner Bros. opened the film in Los Angeles and New York on September 17, 1993. Contemporary notices included reviews in the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and Washington Post; the response was not uniformly enthusiastic. Its later reputation rests less on initial critical standing than on rewatches, home video, skating culture, cast retrospectives, and continued Cincinnati location research. “Cult classic” is the archive’s editorial description of that afterlife, not a measurable production fact.
